<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of the big advantages of driving fossil fuel-powered vehicles is that it's easy to find a place to fill up. In the more than a century since the world's first purpose-built gas station was built in St. Louis, Missouri in 1905, a massive worldwide infrastructure has emerged to keep our vehicles running. As automakers make the move to <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/tag/electric+vehicle/" target="_blank">electric vehicles</a>, early adopters are faced with a lack of infrastructure to keep batteries charged, however, the number of public <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/tag/ev-charging/" target="_blank">EV charging</a> stations is steadily growing and <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/tag/google/" target="_blank">Google</a> is now doing its bit to help make tracking them down easier by adding EV charging station location information to Google Maps.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using data primarily from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DoE) <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/tag/nrel/" target="_blank">National Renewable Energy Laboratory</a> (NREL), users can now search a database of nearly 7,000 alternative fueling stations in the U.S., including 600 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) locations and have the results displayed within Google Maps. For example, searching on Google Maps for "ev charging station near los angeles ca" returns a map of the area with nearby stations highlighted.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To help develop a more detailed and accurate database of EV charging stations and ensure the database stays up to date, the NREL has launched the <a href="http://www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/vehicles/geoevse.php" target="_blank">GeoEVSE</a> (Geo Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) Forum. The forum was formed by the DoE's Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center (AFDC) to provide EVSE manufacturers, distributors, installers and other stakeholders with a central, recognized repository for public EVSE location data.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As information is added to the NREL – and other – databases, Google will add the charging station locations to <a href="http://maps.google.com/" target="_blank">Google Maps</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At first glance the Cobra SL3 looks like a normal radar detector, but it’s really a GPS-enabled speed camera locator. The SL3 features a built-in, updateable database of speed camera and red-light camera locations. Its LED indicators and alert tones warn you when you approach a camera location so you have time to slow down.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Cobra SL3 does not detect police radar; it is a camera locator only. The SL3 uses a GPS receiver to determine when you approach one of the camera locations stored in its AURA database. In addition to speed cameras and red-light cameras, the AURA database also includes driving hazards such as dangerous intersections and as many as 1000 user-defined locations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cobra says the AURA database is updated every 12 hours and customers can access updates 24/7. Simply connect your SL3 to your PC using a USB connection and download the latest location information.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speed trap databases are nothing new. Many navigation GPSs offer this feature, and point-of-interest (POI) packages of camera locations can be downloaded from the Web. There are even combination GPS/radar detectors on the market. On the other hand, radar detectors are illegal in some jurisdictions whereas the Cobra unit is legal. So is the Cobra SL3 for you? It depends on how many gadgets you already have on your dashboard, but for US$99 the SL3 may be worth a look.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Automotive radar and laser detector manufacturer Escort has announced the release of Passport IQ, which combines GPS navigation and radar detection technology in one handy unit. As well as getting you safely from A to B, the new driving accessory is said to be the first that also protects you from annoying and costly tickets by providing information on red light and fixed position speed cameras, known speed traps, speed limit information and more.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Based on Escort's Passport 9500ix GPS-enabled radar and laser detector, the Passport IQ sports a 5-inch, 480 x 272 resolution touchscreen color display. The navigation software provides voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, lane assist and visual 3D mapping powered by Navteq or detector mode. In either mode, the device is said to offer drivers protection from ticketing threats by overlaying red light and speed camera notifications, speed limit information and high risk speed trap warnings on the navigation screen.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The device benefits from Superheterodyne, Varactor-Tuned VCO, Scanning Frequency Discriminator and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) radar and Quantum Limited Video Receiver and Multiple Laser Sensor Diodes laser detection. It operates on all radar bands, including X, K, Superwide Ka, Ku, and instant-on Pop modes. Multiple front and rear laser sensors are said to offer 360-degree protection, and an AutoLearn feature "automatically learns and rejects false radar sources based on exact location and frequency."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Escort says that its intelligent system can "determine which threats are real and automatically locks out those that are false, including automatic door openers, motion sensors, and other sources that cause competitor radar detectors to constantly false alert when no real threats actually exist." The Passport IQ unit can also be connected to the Internet for updates from the company's Defender Database, which users can subscribe to for the latest safety camera and speed trap locations.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Wikitude Drive augmented reality navigation app overlays directional markers on real-time video of the road in front of you </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although many of us don't know how we ever managed without our car navigation systems, they are not without their flaws. For one thing, when that voice says "Turn left in 100 meters," you may find yourself looking out the windshield and wondering "Does that mean <em>this</em> left turn, or the one just past it?" The Wikitude Drive augmented reality navigation app is designed to address these problems, by overlaying directional arrows on real-time video of the road in front of you.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Drive works on select Android smartphones, that have sufficiently capable GPS sensors. Once it is loaded onto such a device, the phone is mounted horizontally on the inside of the windshield. Users have to supply their own suction cup windshield mount.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The phone's camera provides live video of the road, upon which three-dimensional route markers are superimposed - their transparency can be adjusted. In this way, even when drivers are looking at the screen, they're still seeing the traffic and pedestrians in front of them. There's also no ambiguity as to where they should turn. It is possible that the app could give drivers a false sense of safety, however, in that they might forget how little peripheral vision the phone's camera offers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Upon leaving the car, drivers can switch to Pedestrian Mode, and continue to use the app to find their way on foot. Because there may be some situations in a which a conventional 3D map-only view is preferable, that mode can also be selected.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wikitude Drive can be downloaded through the <a href="http://www.wikitude.com/en/tour/wikitude-drive" target="_blank">company website</a>, which also has a list of compatible smartphones. So far, the app is only to users in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy and the UK.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Blaupunkt's Travelpilot navigation system is quite similar, although it is available only as a complete device, not an app.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The UK's Network Rail and Garmin have developed a special sat nav app that causes the navigation device to sound a train-like whistle when the driver approaches a level crossing</div>
<br />
The UK's Highway Code advises the use of care when approaching a level crossing, and to only drive onto a crossing if the exit is clear on the other side. After all, finding yourself blocked on the track when a train is coming is probably not a great position to be in (unless you can depend on <em>Hancock</em> to stop the train before it hits). While such things may seem like common sense, that doesn't appear to prevent drivers from taking stupid risks. Now, Network Rail and Garmin have teamed up to create a special sat nav app which will sound a train-like whistle when a driver approaches a level crossing.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The <a href="http://www.garmin.com/uk/extras-points-of-interest/" target="_blank">free LX app</a> will work with Garmin's nüvi or nüLink sat navs and is available as one of Garmin's In-car Extras. It is hoped that the toot-toot sound, together with a large "X" to mark the spot of the approaching level crossing, will help improve driver awareness and so reduce the number of incidents that cause damage to vehicles or trains.<br />

Further developments in the technology will offer drivers routes which avoid level crossings altogether or alter the route if barriers have been down for a good length of time, if the alternative is quicker than waiting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The initiative follows a scheme where high-visibility British Transport Police vans equipped with license plate recognition cameras were positioned near crossings. During the first three months of operation, 1,131 drivers have been caught and prosecuted - which gives some indication of the problem. Between January and April this year, there have also been 31 cases of vehicles narrowly avoiding collision with trains, 58 collisions with barriers, a couple of vehicles being struck by trains and even a death.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Avatar-based Virtual Co-driver System is designed to replace a vehicle's owner's manual with an interactive video avatar </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At one time not all that long ago, cars had a warning light on the dashboard that simply said "ENGINE." That's pretty vague. Really, it might just as well have said "CAR." Some newer automobiles now have codes that appear on the console, which the driver must then look up in an index in the vehicle's owner's manual. Working with Audi, Germany's Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) Institute of Business Informatics is now working on taking things a step farther, with the development of an on-screen avatar that will talk to drivers, and even understand their spoken questions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The experimental Avatar-based Virtual Co-driver System (AviCoS) is designed to work with the monitor of the Audi Mulitmedia Interface, which already comes standard on all of the automaker's vehicles.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The system uses artificial intelligence to understand drivers' spoken questions about their car, and responds verbally. Descriptive images and videos also appear on-screen, with the animated avatar character pointing out relevant details. In Touch and Tell mode, drivers can also receive explanations of various vehicle functions by touching the appropriate areas of the screen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As with many such <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/tag/driver+assistance/" target="_blank">driver assistance technologies</a>, there is the possibility that AviCoS could distract drivers from paying attention to the road. The designers have somewhat addressed that problem, by suppressing first the image of the avatar, and then all of the graphics, as the vehicle's speed increases. Drivers remain able to converse with the avatar, however, which could still be distracting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Down the road, the <a href="http://portal.mytum.de/pressestelle/pressemitteilungen/NewsArticle_20110804_113659" target="_blank">TUM</a> researchers would like to see the system being able to identify the driver's state of mind, by analyzing their tone of voice and speech rhythm. If AviCoS determined that the driver was getting stressed out, it could lessen their sensory overload by suppressing its video output. Working with the car's other systems, it could also do things such as instructing the navigation system to provide directions earlier, and more often.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGFI4yBahM6_jO00iuzyQN75P1KFqeq277keFAYcekKvqCC1xHrlq2LU82jOv7vgO7tfT_2_pDAVh9QMcU_thASDBWZM_a2iQxNYROyBipiddQXww076VESg1p34XiK7Gpf7bCu6pwseg/s1600/evprofiler-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGFI4yBahM6_jO00iuzyQN75P1KFqeq277keFAYcekKvqCC1xHrlq2LU82jOv7vgO7tfT_2_pDAVh9QMcU_thASDBWZM_a2iQxNYROyBipiddQXww076VESg1p34XiK7Gpf7bCu6pwseg/s640/evprofiler-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The EV Profiler is a driving data recorder, that lets users know how specific electric vehicles would be able to meet their present driving needs </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You may have heard people saying that most electric vehicles have plenty of range for an average driver's daily needs, but ... how does that apply to you? It would definitely be disappointing to purchase an EV, only to discover that your driving habits are significantly more taxing that what is considered "average." What would be good is if there was some sort of device that you could attach to your existing car, that would observe your driving habits, then tell you how a certain make and model of EV would stand up to those demands. That device, it turns out, exists in the form of the EV Profiler driving data recorder.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Instead of having to buy a Profiler, the idea is that prospective buyers of electric cars will rent one either from the EV Profiler company itself, or from a local auto dealer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The gadget itself mounts with a suction cup to the inside of the windshield, and plugs into the vehicle's power port. Utilizing a variety of internal sensors, it then proceeds to log how far you drive, how fast you accelerate and cruise, the amount of time you spend going up- and downhill, how much you stop-and-go, and other factors that would influence the range of an EV. It actually started out as an app, but it was found that the sensors in smartphones were insufficient for its purposes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcPIF1ryZszWYtdVqp8gG-o_MK9uvAAD2ajKsvqFLyGVTvEN9bqg0yOyLmtg8Ghe73subp2wfbbwPNiDRM4ZjbluOSIWV33x0I8oeWb12dwfk2nrly8nwDRq0fMtAkR_8JvOdNkBbWsH0/s1600/evprofiler-0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcPIF1ryZszWYtdVqp8gG-o_MK9uvAAD2ajKsvqFLyGVTvEN9bqg0yOyLmtg8Ghe73subp2wfbbwPNiDRM4ZjbluOSIWV33x0I8oeWb12dwfk2nrly8nwDRq0fMtAkR_8JvOdNkBbWsH0/s400/evprofiler-0.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Profiler uploads the logged information to the company's servers every night, where an online profile is maintained for each user. Along with daily reports, at the end of a predetermined test period (typically about a week), you will receive an emailed final report outlining how the EV of your choice would be able to handle your driving needs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not only would that report tell you much juice the battery would have left after your daily drive, but you could also use it to determine how often you would need to charge the battery, what strength of charger you would require, how varying factors such as traffic might affect your range, how much money you would save on fuel, and how other models of EV would compare.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although manufacturers of dedicated car navigation systems have been hit hard by the surge in popularity of apps that give a <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/navigon-on-board-navigation-system-iphone/12346/" target="_blank">smartphone</a> all the navigational bells and whistles like turn-by-turn directions and voice guidance, dedicated systems still have their advantages – most obviously a larger screen size. But even that advantage could now be under fire from tablet computers that boast equal or larger screen sizes, along with wider functionality such as multimedia and Internet browsing capabilities. Recognizing this, car navigation systems company, Rydeen Mobile Electronics has teamed up with Marvell to produce the Rydeen GCOM701 – an Android powered 7-inch tablet that is being marketed as a tablet/GPS navigation device hybrid.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The GCOM701 features built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, a front-facing camera and an internal microphone and speaker, enabling the use of Internet-based communications services such as Skype. Users can surf the web, read e-books and view photos or videos on the device’s 7-inch, 800 x 480 resolution TFT touch panel then, for navigation duties on the road the unit is preloaded with four million points of interest courtesy of Navteq.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Consumers today expect their personal mobile connected devices to combine seamless connectivity, broad business functionality, a diverse communications suite and an enthralling multimedia experience in a convenient and elegant form factor," said Weili Dai, Marvell's Co-founder and Vice President and General Manager of the Consumer and Computing Business Unit of <a href="http://www.marvell.com/" target="_blank">Marvell Semiconductor, Inc</a>. "By integrating Marvell's ARMADA application processor technology into Rydeen's new portable navigation device, we are now able to create a compelling navigational experience unmatched in the industry" said Phil Maeda, President of <a href="http://www.rydeenmobile.com/index.html" target="_blank">Rydeen</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The GCOM701 will be available from November and will feature two color options, black or white. The price is yet to be announced.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Helmet cameras have now achieved the pinnacle of HD recording: 1080p. If you have the cash, a head, and a pastime worth filming you have a few choices for full HD extreme POV recording. So what's a little lid-mounted recorder to do for its next trick? If you're <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contour"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Contour</span></a> it's to add a positional sensor and the letters G, P, and S to your product and create the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/contourgps"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">ContourGPS</span></a>. It lets you not only record your extreme antics but also how fast you were going when you were partaking in them, plus a lot of other information. And, more promisingly, there's a suite of hardware updates here, some paving the way to letting you <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/07/contourgps-live-viewfinder-on-ios-hands-on/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">use your smartphone as a viewfinder</span></a>. But how does this $350 piece of helmet jewelry perform on the ice? Keep on reading for some video evidence.</div>
<h6 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Updated hardware</span></h6>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitSroCnEpmENsD1QMH8MxYs4FBl0Mv3TMF8a2FwrfV35pbnGPChDs4NPVMHv6g_zx4kKT_Rkz8_Y2xd1RIyltVk1idp9CzkEEjIbvioLnxuqOn5zQ9lE9rFbkowYxRUVmNTtZ-a9yKYN8/s1600/contour-gps-2011-01-25-800-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitSroCnEpmENsD1QMH8MxYs4FBl0Mv3TMF8a2FwrfV35pbnGPChDs4NPVMHv6g_zx4kKT_Rkz8_Y2xd1RIyltVk1idp9CzkEEjIbvioLnxuqOn5zQ9lE9rFbkowYxRUVmNTtZ-a9yKYN8/s640/contour-gps-2011-01-25-800-01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The biggest update here is the included GPS receiver, naturally. Using it the camera adds positional information to the footage that it captures (at your choice of resolutions up to 1080p), which lets you later view the path covered and speed achieved while recording. Also new is a Bluetooth module, a nugget of silicon that's not doing anything right now but, in the near future, will enable mobile devices to receive video in real-time and to modify camera settings, a feature Contour calls <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/contour-adds-live-viewfinder-to-its-contourgps-helmet-cam-real/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Live Viewfinder</span></a>.<br />

<br />
Beyond that Contour has a habit of subtly tweaking and improving its camera designs with each revision, with the ContourHD 1080p model getting a more progressive slider compared to its 720p predecessor, along with a few other subtle tweaks. The new ContourGPS still shares the same look as those two that came before, but it offers still more modifications. The slider up top, which is used to start and stop recording, is now raised with little rubber nubbies sticking out. This makes it even easier to start and stop this camera without having to take off your super-comfy, fleece-lined mittens.<br />
<br />

<br />
Around back the door that covers the battery case is now hard plastic and spring-loaded, much more secure than the previous one that always felt a bit flimsy. To keep it from flipping open at the wrong time a little lock has been added, but the push power button on the back remains unchanged. It's still awful hard to find with gloves on and sometimes hard to activate even bare handed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioHTsxpdf9QyNm3qtUSP0Ktbe6SJ4efqMF45665zf3tGDiY2BwSmlgL4Hbyz-HbaqCcUY6R6sbVCH0-av5sMRbFJXYkG3Rr9L7RDTbyV7WvvsbxkNpg7mjjRG6VHJLsEeN7fkvqBFGHMs/s1600/contour-gps-2011-01-25-800-04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioHTsxpdf9QyNm3qtUSP0Ktbe6SJ4efqMF45665zf3tGDiY2BwSmlgL4Hbyz-HbaqCcUY6R6sbVCH0-av5sMRbFJXYkG3Rr9L7RDTbyV7WvvsbxkNpg7mjjRG6VHJLsEeN7fkvqBFGHMs/s640/contour-gps-2011-01-25-800-04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Flip the door open and the layout inside is much the same, with a miniUSB port on the left (still no micro), battery on the right, and a microSD slot in the middle. The battery is now held in place by a spring-loaded clasp instead of the finicky rotating lock that always gave us problems before, and there's a tiny switch that lets you toggle between one of two modes. Which two modes? We're glad you asked.<br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><strong>Updated software</strong></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We've never exactly been a fan of the software suite that's been provided with Contour's cameras, so we weren't too disappointed to see a wholly new software suite introduced here. It's called Storyteller unfortunately it's basically the same as before. Through this app you can download footage from your camera, view it, and upload it to Contour's site. You can also do simple editing -- as long as you only want to trim the front and the back off of the video. You can't do anything more advanced and, while you're free to do what you will using an external video tool (footage is encoded in a .mov container), if you do so you'll lose the GPS data. So much for that idea.<br />
<br />
The software also lets you configure the camera, creating two configurations with different resolutions, exposure and sound settings, and also selecting whether GPS is enabled. Many of these tweaks will mess with your battery life, which the app will warn you about -- though it stops short of giving you any estimated figures.<br />
<br />
Upload a video from the app and it'll show up on the Contour website, which attempts to offer a bit more social interaction than your YouTubes and the like. More important is that it has room for a map over on the right, providing a real-time Google Maps overlay of where the wearer was during this frame of footage and how fast they were going. At least, it will do that assuming the camera scored a GPS lock before the footage started recording.</div>
<h6 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Testing</span></h6>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Our first impressions with the camera out of the box were good, improved hardware feeling nice but still sharing the same sophisticated design as before. Sadly, our first impressions trying to use the thing were not so good. There's a little light on the front of the camera that blinks green when it's looking for GPS, turning solid when locked on. Initially, we tried and we wished as hard as we could but we just couldn't get it to go solid. <br />
<br />
Using the initial firmware for the camera, even leaving the thing outside and on for 30 minutes we'd struggle to get a lock, and any trees in the vicinity would prevent that. However, about a week after this review initially went live we were provided with a firmware update that comprehensively fixed this problem. GPS locks were scored in under 30 seconds, trees or no trees. <br />
<br />
<img align="right" alt="" border="1" hspace="4" id="vimage_3815934" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/01/contour-face-2011-01-25.jpg" vspace="14" />You can see the results in the embed above, which charts our progress around the plowed out track, chasing down an opponent in a white Mitsubishi EVO. The pass was ultimately made but the position later given back, clipping a snow bank on the last lap of the race. Unfortunately we can't show you that part because the driver of the camera car took that opportunity to hurl a few choice bits of profanity. Since the Storyteller app doesn't allow you to cut out sections or do anything with the audio we simply had to cut the clip short.<br />
<br />
Overall video and audio performance of the camera seems unchanged from our earlier review of the Contour 1080p, so <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/vholdr-contourhd1080p-helmet-cam-announced-we-go-hands-on/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">you'll want to read that</span></a>. Wind noise at high speeds is perhaps a bit better managed here but still very noticeable, as you can see in <a href="http://contour.com/stories/amec-round-2-race-3"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">this other clip</span></a> that we captured with the camera mounted on the roof. Curiously, the GPS didn't work for that one.<br />
<br />
Battery life seems comparable to the 1080p model as well -- at least it is with the GPS module disabled. Recording at the highest quality 1080p mode with GPS enabled we eked out a minute short of two hours before our camera went kaput. Without GPS that time went up to 2.5 hours. Moving down to a 720p encoding at a lower bitrate battery life jumped another 30 minutes to three hours of continuous recording. If that's not enough you can plug the camera in to a charger while it's in use, assuming you have access to a charger while doing whatever extreme thing you're doing.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiif39Wy3myppyPYKPPT3sjfHdiuHE5fErAVOuMqm3_8M8x-aFUypByu_8Qnf9kDnQ-DG4cvtGca1yeLt9HUwraEYxxec8Il_OPsaljKbLhrUghn18QNtnOqqT60HPH5sOTC4xQLahzOy8/s1600/contour-gps-telemetry-2011-01-25-600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiif39Wy3myppyPYKPPT3sjfHdiuHE5fErAVOuMqm3_8M8x-aFUypByu_8Qnf9kDnQ-DG4cvtGca1yeLt9HUwraEYxxec8Il_OPsaljKbLhrUghn18QNtnOqqT60HPH5sOTC4xQLahzOy8/s640/contour-gps-telemetry-2011-01-25-600.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
GPS accuracy, meanwhile, is good, but a low refresh rate in the camera can make for some occasionally chunky interpretation when you're moving at speed, as evidenced in the hairpin turn. You can see the difference of the camera's trace above on the left, compared to an external 5Hz Bluetooth GPS unit connected through TrackMaster on Android, shown on the right. However, since we initially published this review this footage Contour has released an update enabling 4Hz refresh rates in GPS, which goes a long way to making things much more smooth.<br />
<br />
<h6>
<span style="font-size: small;">Wrap-up</span></h6>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid3HPSZAYLRpZuU2A5Va5UCfg9OINOvO88r5p2vOEcwavifE7ZVIaIvloBTn_ezh0eS0dZXd11-saglnQq2L-dVXIGlVXkBgPBhLTBalYVrX97OByhnJA356NWFDXUXktXSAfcJoNumaU/s1600/contour-gps-2011-01-25-600-13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid3HPSZAYLRpZuU2A5Va5UCfg9OINOvO88r5p2vOEcwavifE7ZVIaIvloBTn_ezh0eS0dZXd11-saglnQq2L-dVXIGlVXkBgPBhLTBalYVrX97OByhnJA356NWFDXUXktXSAfcJoNumaU/s640/contour-gps-2011-01-25-600-13.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The ContourGPS offers a subtly improved design that we think is definitely a step forward, and the inclusion of Bluetooth to enable the use of a smartphone as a viewfinder will be a huge coup when that releases. But the extra cost here -- $350 vs. $280 for the 1080p model -- is still something of a hard sell. If you disposable income reserves are solid and you're curious just what speeds you hit on the double-diamond, this is the camera for you. More budget-conscious might want to go with the 1080p, get an extra battery for $30 and spend the rest on a nice dinner. But be warned: take that route now and you might be a little jealous when that upcoming live viewfinder mode comes to life.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: We got a note from Dmitriy letting us know there's a <a href="https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fd2141htz9zn2s2.cloudfront.net%2Fproduct%2Ffw%2Fhd60%2F1.10%2Frelease_notes.pdf"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">hidden tweak</span></a> you can manually make to the camera's configuration that allows you to run the GPS unit at a higher refresh rate. This should result in a cleaner resulting map if you're doing high-speed stuff, like we were here.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2</strong>: Contour provided a new firmware for us to test about a week after this review went live and it comprehensively fixes the GPS issues we had. Even standing near trees we were able to get a lock in under 30 seconds, and when filming numerous clips (like the one embedded below) the signal was never lost. Whether the camera is worth the additional cost over the 1080p model is of course still up to you, but the considerably improved performance is worth an extra point on the review score in our book.<br />

Half a year ago, finding a conventional point-and-shoot with integrated GPS was a chore, but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/16/casio-exilim-ex-h20g-with-hybrid-gps-camera-review/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">these days</span></a>, it's growing tougher and tougher to find one <i>without</i> it. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Pentax/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Pentax</span></a> is joining the <a href="http://www.gadling.com/2011/01/29/geotagging-your-travels-why-you-should-and-how-to-do-it/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">geotagging frenzy</span></a> this evening with its Optio WG-1 GPS, a rugged 14 megapixel shooter that's waterproof up to 33 feet, shockproof in nature and engineered with a "crushproof" body that can withstand weight force of up to 220 pounds (but not another Black Eyed Peas halftime show). You'll also get integrated face detection technology, the ability to snap in sub-freezing temperatures, a 5x optical zoom lens and a 2.7-inch rear LCD. There's also a 720p movie mode, HDMI output, IR control compatibility and support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EyeFi/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Eye-Fi</span></a>'s wireless SD card. It'll ship this April in black or yellow-green for $399.95, and if you're uncomfortable remembering where you took each and every photograph, the GPS-less Optio WG-1 will also be available (in black or purple) for $50 less.</div>

In related news, the company is taking this opportunity to issue a limited edition <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/21/pentax-k-5-review-roundup-solid-but-pricey-upgrade-from-the-k-7/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">K-5 DSLR</span></a>, with this one touting a silver body, a uniquely shaped grip and shock-resistant, scratchproof glass surrounding the LCD. Outside of that, everything else about the 16.3 megapixel shooter will remain the same as it ever was, and the $1,699.95 (body only) price point is most certainly no easier to swallow. For those still sold on the idea, Pentax will also be offering a trifecta of silver prime lenses: the 21m f/3.2 AL, 40mm f/2.8 and the 70mm f/2.4. Check out Sir Silver (and the full press releases) just after the break. </div>

GPS, a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor, 15x optical zoom -- we've seen it all before. But a feature that displays places of interest on the camera's 3-inch LCD? Well, that sounds a bit like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/augmentedreality/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">augmented reality</span></a> (AR)! The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FujiFilm/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Fujifilm</span></a> FinePix F600 EXR's new Landmark Navigator mode does exactly that, packing one million pre-loaded locations from around the world. Looking to find your way from Rome's Trevi Fountain to the Spanish Steps? The compact cam will point the way, including other stops along your route. You can also add your own locations, or launch Photo Navigation, which lets you easily return to places you've photographed -- or plot them on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoogleMaps/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Google Maps</span></a> once you get home. There's also 1080p movie capture, a 12,800 ISO high-sensitivity mode (that you'll probably never want to use), sensor-shift image stabilization, and a 24-360mm lens with an f/3.5 maximum aperture. But as you may have guessed, we're most excited about those AR features, so jump past the break for the full scoop. </div>

It looks like Motorola might be prepping to give the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/nike-sportwatch-gps-with-tomtom-hands-on/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Nike+</span></a> SportWatch a run for its money. An intrepid tipster sent along a screenshot from a recent survey showing off what looks like a tricked out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ipod+nano+watch/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">nano watch</span></a>. Described as an "all-in-one fitness and music personal fitness device" (redundant much?) that packs a GPS for "accurate performance tracking," the as of yet unnamed gadget also sports a "smart music player" that compiles a list of songs based on the tunes that help you sweat your best. It also lets you wirelessly sync to your PC for workout analysis, and apparently does the same for Android devices. Among the possible names listed in the survey is the MotoActive, hinting at, but certainly not pinning down, Motorola branding. Of course this is just an online survey, so we wouldn't get too excited about your new running mate just yet.<br />

HAPMAP was one of a handful of projects selected for demonstration at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/SIGGRAPH/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">SIGGRAPH</span></a>'s E-tech event, aiming to keep a human's eye away from the map (and in turn, on whatever's in front of them) by developing a system that guides via haptics. With a handheld device capable of both navigating and vibrating, the interface indicates complex navigation cues that follow the curvature of a road or path -- it's far more detailed than the typical "go straight," and there's also opportunity here to provide handicapped individuals with a method for getting to previously inaccessible locales. By mimicking the operation and interface of sliding handrails (as well as using motion capture cameras), it's particularly useful for the visually impaired, who need these subtle cues to successfully navigate a winding path. Hop on past the break for a couple of demonstration vids.</div>

Sure, everyone loves <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/google-maps-navigation-to-go-offline-this-summer-garmin-and-tom/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Google Maps Navigation</span></a>, it's free, and it comes on every Android handset. However, those wanting a more personal experience from their phone's GPS (and are on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sprint/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Now Network</span></a>) should check out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/TeleNav/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">TeleNav</span></a> GPS Navigator 7.1. Among the changes from prior iterations of the app are a new home screen with real-time traffic updates and customizable "Home" and "Work" buttons to show your impending commute times. So you can pick the fastest way home (or the most direct route to happy hour) 7.1 also recommends multiple routes to your chosen destination and provides drive times and traffic conditions for each route. As if that weren't enough, you can also download three widgets to put on your Android home screen: a map showing your current location, a search bar, and a widget that shows your home and work commute times. We enjoy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/10/tomtom-go-live-top-gear-edition-brings-clarkson-onboard-as-navig/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">celebrities giving us directions</span></a> and all, but it's good to see some new functional features coming to the GPS game. The next time you head out for a leisurely Sunday drive along the a<em>utobahn</em>, you might wanna take a minute to consult Google Maps' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/07/google-maps-navigation-for-android-adds-real-time-traffic-re-rou/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">live traffic</span></a> feature, now available in Germany and 12 other nations across Europe. Announced earlier this week, the new addition offers regularly updated coverage of all highways and major thoroughfares in countries like Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, while bringing more detailed street-level data to users in the UK. Europe's road warriors will also be able to use a legend to learn about traffic patterns at specific times or days of the week, making it even easier for you to micro-manage your summer getaway to the Swiss Alps. Learning how to fit all your luggage into the back of a Twingo, however, is another matter altogether.</div>

Hitting stores this September in the land of human-assistive tech, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kyocera/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Kyocera</span></a> designed Mi-Look is a simplified GPS-capable, mobile-monitoring system that puts <em>you</em> in control of your Luddite parents. The waterproof device packs a strap-activated "I've fallen and I can't get up" buzzer and comes in an appealing shade of hospital white, all while keeping track of your folk's whereabouts. Seems innocent enough, right? Well, it's not really up to Ma and Pa to opt-out of location tracking -- the phone does it automatically, emailing a list of relatives with coordinates and distance traveled. And for that extra special Lindsay Lohan-lockdown touch, the charging port's sensor will not only count the number of times your rents pass by, it'll also answer calls automagically. Starting to feel a little bad about this? We don't blame you, but keep in mind the compassionate tech's being targeted to patients with memory loss issues. Still, we have a suspicion those with claims of a "stolen childhood" might be using this as revenge. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/23/insignias-little-buddy-child-tracker-encourages-kids-to-run-awa/"><span style="color: #00bdf6;">Payback's</span></a> a cellphone, apparently. Here’s why<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span class="by vcard"><strong>By </strong><a href="http://www.extremetech.com/author/bhoward" rel="author" title="Posts by Bill Howard"><span style="color: #666666;"><strong>Bill Howard</strong></span></a></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCWQXPteYr7jr9yqDEMijFw0Zn7Bwi2bQhbOeRu6j6SE49aOpa8C4WKQdUua9eJ6K8qTQ22f52wzASL8LK5uTDvQ869GbmoFwBBqk4bEitGVMCWk0eBIZaT86-pfiw4jTH8ruYICuh8g0/s1600/MG_9308-348x196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCWQXPteYr7jr9yqDEMijFw0Zn7Bwi2bQhbOeRu6j6SE49aOpa8C4WKQdUua9eJ6K8qTQ22f52wzASL8LK5uTDvQ869GbmoFwBBqk4bEitGVMCWk0eBIZaT86-pfiw4jTH8ruYICuh8g0/s400/MG_9308-348x196.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As portable <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/gps"><span style="color: #b1700a;">GPS</span></a> systems free-fall below $200, automakers stubbornly keep prices of onboard navigation at $1500 to $2000. There are a host of reasons why and they help explain but hardly excuse the bloated pricing of embedded navigation. Some auto analysts say $1000 is the most you can justify for first-class onboard navigation and sooner or later that may be the most, not least you’ll pay for the superiority of built-in navigation. There’s increasing sentiment within the industry that you are indeed getting ripped off today buying navigation systems.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Why is onboard navigation so expensive? Thilo Koslowski, a VP of the Gartner Industry Advisory Service Manufacturing group, says “[Onboard navigation] could be under $1000 and still be a healthy value proposition” for both automakers and buyers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVx2XFKFrzmuvVD1rpr92E6vVVkix_evOdaRU1mlPp15Sm0AtnBNp8Kn56ZMx2rPVUiR-E4a-Vbc_GjzmJme_SsO7e10bVCGD9q5tNBBWyD3Db2Wtx8o2MducLoyO0yByTK-tA_bzJwXw/s1600/ford_gps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVx2XFKFrzmuvVD1rpr92E6vVVkix_evOdaRU1mlPp15Sm0AtnBNp8Kn56ZMx2rPVUiR-E4a-Vbc_GjzmJme_SsO7e10bVCGD9q5tNBBWyD3Db2Wtx8o2MducLoyO0yByTK-tA_bzJwXw/s400/ford_gps.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Signs that the end is near for overpriced onboard navigation include the proliferation of navigation-and-other-stuff packages that mask a lowered price for the navigation part yet makes it harder for buyers to compare acrosse brands; short-term get-navigation-free-if-you-buy-or-lease-this-month offers; and innovative packages such as Ford’s SD card <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/ford-sync"><span style="color: #b1700a;">Sync</span></a> navigation priced at $795. (Ford requires the car already have a color LCD display, so it’s not really sub-$1000 navigation.) Navigation is treated as an accessory, and accessories and options carry a higher markup than the base car. Koslowski says a price drop in a car accessory is often preceded by inclusion in a package.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Chris Schreiner, director of the automotive consumer insights practice at Strategy Analytics explains the conventional wisdom (“navigation has to cost a lot”) this way: “The main factor is the general cost of integrating the navigation system with the rest of the infotainment unit and the vehicle controls. A portable navigation device can be cheaper because it’s a standalone unit. The [onboard] nav system needs to be integrated with the steering wheel controls… and any other connected services.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other factors the can explain some of embedded navigation costs include larger displays, typically 7 inches diagonal and up to 10 inches, higher fees for the mapping software for embedded navigation, and even the warranty: PNDs are usually warranted for a year while a new car warranty runs three and sometimes four or five years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Install navigation in a new Infiniti G37 and it costs $1850. On a BMW 3 Series it’s $1900, on a BMW 5 Series in a package with Bluetooth, USB, and mayday calling Series it’s $2,150 but currently free on the all-wheel-drive 5 Series. The Lexus ES system costs $2675 and that includes a rear sunshade. On cheaper cars such as the Chevrolet Malibu, it’s not offered at all, since buyers don’t see much value in an option that approaches 10% of the list price. (The Malibu does offer rudimentary arrows-only, no-moving-map, navigation as part of the $30 a month OnStar telematics service.) On many cars $50,000 and up, navigation is more likely to be included.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Portable navigation devices may not be the real competition. “The benchmark for the auto industry isn’t a competiting automaker,” explains Gartner’s Koslowski, “It’s a smartphone like the iPhone…” And with prices for navigation that range from free to $10 a month.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kowslowski believes the right place for car navigation is embedded into the car. In the car, the display is bigger, it’s not likely to be stolen, and it can take advantage of a cellular data connection either from your mobile phone or an embedded cellular data modem. As hardware prices come down, more cars will embed data modems. Then the car can offer always-up-to-date map data, information on restaurants and hotels, and the possible recurring revenue stream from helping make reservations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A first step in making navigation more affordable is decoupling the center stack LCD display from the navigation system. The upcoming Hyundai Veloster sports coupe (think of a Honda CR-Z as the competition) has a 7-inch LCD in every car, whether or not you buy navigation. Previously Hyundai has the industry’s cheapest navigation system in the last-generation Hyundai Sonata at $1250, and that included an LCD display.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next step is up to the automakers: getting real on pricing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The clue to making <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/91600-bmw%e2%80%99s-dazzling-i-brand-why-they-opted-for-a-carbon-fiber-chevy-volt-not-a-nissan-leaf" title="BMW’s dazzling i cars: More carbon fiber Chevy Volt than Nissan Leaf"><span style="color: #b1700a;">future cars</span></a> feel more alive and in touch with the road may lie in understanding what makes old racecars perform the way they do. A team of researchers and engineers from Stanford took a vintage Porsche to the racetrack outfitted with sensors on both the car and driver to measure how they react. What they learn could make future cars feel better. It might also make Stanford’s autonomous, self-driving <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/cars" title="Carnivorous plant inspires self-cleaning smear-proof material"><span style="color: #b1700a;">car</span></a> capable of performing even closer to its theoretical limits.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stanford started well. The team borrowed a 1960 Porsche 356B Carrera Abarth GTL racer from the collection of businessman, artist and philanthropist Miles Collier. (James Dean drove an earlier Porsche 356, including on his last and fatal drive.) The 356 is a seminal design in Porsche racing history. To that, they attached an array of sensors and data recorders on the suspension, throttle, brakes, and steering wheel. A <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/gps"><span style="color: #b1700a;">GPS</span></a> receiver and gyroscope track the car’s progress on the track with inch-by-inch accuracy, as well as measure body roll and acceleration / deceleration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL1BUwq8eH6OV2kjyZtwUAXAVjpWns2yoZh3uWGoCXsrXCxj8pVV_x34bbLFD4P1Av8OLmkWqLfCrNGtPn0hQqKSoDfkf1lWIQZLRrL5-TfexI3JldL6xzA_7VmCk5zTcBQtXcA2EJX1o/s1600/2011_bmw_535i_133_2_cd_gallery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL1BUwq8eH6OV2kjyZtwUAXAVjpWns2yoZh3uWGoCXsrXCxj8pVV_x34bbLFD4P1Av8OLmkWqLfCrNGtPn0hQqKSoDfkf1lWIQZLRrL5-TfexI3JldL6xzA_7VmCk5zTcBQtXcA2EJX1o/s400/2011_bmw_535i_133_2_cd_gallery.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then they went and outfitted the drivers with sensors, too, measuring sweat, core body temperature (we’re not asking where that sensor’s located), and blood volume — and future testing will include brain activity, too. These biological responses are then plotted against the data from the car. All this is being done at the historic Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, during vintage races. (If academics don’t get rich from teaching, there are compensations such as this).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Drive an old racecar or a vintage performance car and you find two things: The controls and sometimes even the handling seem crude. Yet the car seems alive and in touch with the road. Good drivers can actually sense and react to the changing road surface through the feel transmitted from the tires and suspension to the body and steering wheel. The lack of sound insulation in older cars gives a better sense of the environment, too: gravel, rain or leaves under the wheels, for instance, or noises from the car body when it’s pushed in corners. That’s part of what Stanford wants to capture with all that test data.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Giving new cars that sense of oneness with the road is important. Mechanically assisted power steering, common for generations, took away some road feel, then it got better. Now it’s electric power steering that’s being blasted. When BMW switched from mechanical to electrically assisted power steering in the redesign of the BMW 5 Series (pictured right) a year ago, <a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/11q1/2011_bmw_535i_xdrive-short_take_road_test"><span style="color: #b1700a;">Car and Driver</span></a> wrote, “The steering in the [BMW] 550i is by far its greatest downfall. The electrically assisted system is linear, but it feels artificially heavy and is devoid of feedback … the lack of feedback leaves one guessing the precise amount of input needed to control the vehicle.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Stanford’s goals are multiple: improve the feel of future cars, improve their safety, and also help Stanford’s autonomous driving car do even better driving itself. Stanford and Carnegie-Mellon have been at the forefront of <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/88824-cmu-develops-self-driving-car-thats-impossible-to-crash" title="CMU develops self-driving cars that are impossible to crash"><span style="color: #b1700a;">research into cars that drive themselves</span></a>. Stanford’s current autononous driving car is an Audi TTS, called Shelley. Artificial intelligence computers in the trunk connect to the car’s existing controls (including an electronic throttle and electronic power steering).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“What we’re interested in here is understanding: How do the calculations of our autonomous car compare to very skilled drivers,” says Chris Gerdes, program director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford. “Do skilled drivers have an advantage because of their ability to adapt to conditions? Or does the autonomous vehicle have an advantage because of the ability to reproduce things exactly every time and have a much more precise understanding of where it is on the track at any given moment?”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Stanford researchers, in the interests of science, will do a wash, rinse and repeat data-collection cycle on some of Collier’s other vintage cars (he has 100) to gather more data, and then do the same with modern vehicles. The data will be archived at the Stanford library.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Professor Cliff Nass, who directs the new interdisciplinary Revs Program at Stanford, says, “Eventually we will have a corpus, a set of every single car and driver, to be able to answer the question, ‘How do cars and drivers interact in the most compelling ways?’”</div>

Modular Advance Armed Robotic Systems (MAARS)-wired.com </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
MEMASUKI abad ke-21, teknologi tingkat tinggi berkembang di berbagai bidang kehidupan. Mulai industri, transportasi, hingga pertahanan. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Modus semi mematikan digunakan untuk sekadar melumpuhkan sasaran. Contohnya, menembakkan peluru karet, gas air mata, atau asap. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Foto: Afni Zulkifli/JPNN</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bayangkan saja, penjaga counter parfum pun punya BMW! <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Foto: Afni Zulkifli/JPNN.</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Penduduk Kota Dubai sendiri hanya sekitar 2,2 juta.
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Pemerintah Jepang memberlakukan kenaikan tarif tol.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Kalau lupa alamat, cukup menuliskan nomor telepon</strong>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Biliknya berjajar puluhan. Tersedia air minum dan teh hangat. <br />
<br />
Apalagi jika dibanding tarif tol Indonesia.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Pada awalnya masyarakat menggerutu atas kenaikan itu. Tapi pemerintah jalan terus. Penjelasan lewat semua media digencarkan.
<br />
Motor-motor besar di atas seribu cc ikut meramaikan bersama mobil-mobil beraneka jenis. Mereka bersama keluarga menikmati hari terakhir sebelum tarif tol naik.
<br />
Sesekali kereta api Sinkansen lewat. Besoknya, ketika tarif baru mulai diber lakukan, tol sepi. Tapi tiga hari kemudian tampak normal kembali. Lalu lalang mobil kembali tampak seperti biasa.
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Seperti apa?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
’’Aku mencari konten lokal masih jarang banget,’’ ujarnya.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Di sela-sela masa istirahatnya setelah lelah bekerja di kantor, dia meriset dan akhirnya berhasil meluncurkan salah satu aplikasi bernama Radar Bakmi. Meski bukan penggemar mie, tapi ia sadar hampir sebagian besar warga Jakarta selalu menyempatkan diri makan mie.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
