Pemandu Jalan yang Makin Cerdas

MIO TECHNOLOGY
Salah satu produk perangkat GPS buatan Mio Technology.

Mio Technology Gives Navigation a New “Spirit”
~ Cutting-edge software improves user experience with intuitive, fast interface ~

LAS VEGAS – Jan. 8, 2009 – Mio Technology announced that its “Mio Spirit” navigation software will be the new software platform for Mio’s North American product line. Being shown at CES 2009, the software is fast and easy to use, and enables users to get the most out of their GPS devices. The interface features uncluttered map views, simple point of interest searches and fewer clicks to reach information vital to the navigation experience.

“Mio Spirit is a breakthrough in current navigation software design,” said Samuel Wang, president, Mio Technology. “By simplifying the navigation device’s interface, users can save time and effort during their travel.”

Mio Spirit is the latest evolution of Mio’s software development capabilities. Devices using the Mio Spirit navigation software will have Text-to-Speech, a more intuitive POI menu – called “Explore Mode” – and optional real-time traffic capabilities. Customer feedback demanded more flexibility when searching for POIs near their current location, destination or along a planned route, and Mio Spirit software delivers all these capabilities. It also makes more information available with fewer clicks on the navigation menu – Mio has increased the navigation options and POI data that can be viewed without clicking through multiple layers of menus.

“Mobile phone and MP3 industry players have already launched products that maximize the latest in touch screen interfaces for an intuitive experience, and the Mio Spirit introduction moves the portable navigation device into the most progressive class of technology and usability,” said Jerry Barbera, vice president of sales and marketing, Mio Technology USA. “Mio Spirit navigation software has been in development for more than two years, using insight from consumer electronics users of all ages. Many said that GPS devices focus only on going from place-to-place – this software incorporates more functions, more simply, and helps users capitalize on what’s possible along the way.”

Mio Spirit offers a user-friendly keyword search function that makes it easier to find a POI. Instead of having to spell out the exact name of a restaurant, a user can enter a portion of a name, such as “café,” and access all nearby POIs with “café” in the name. Mio Spirit software also includes an easy-to-use “slide-screen” function – users can pull up a POI screen, for example, and simply slide it out of view while looking at additional POI screens or a map. A capture button lets users record favorite routes, locations and voice memos during a trip.
Mio Spirit has already been introduced on Mio/Navman devices in various locations in Asia and Europe, and now, all new Mio products launched in North America will ship with the software. Mio will continue to support the MioMap 2008 software that is on the Moov family of devices and provide map data updates for its Moov products.

Mio Technology has put itself in the GPS driver’s seat at CES 2009, announcing new portable navigation devices (PNDs), an improved software platform for Mio’s next North American product offerings and additions to its executive marketing team.

“2009 is going to be a watershed year for Mio,” said Jerry Barbera, vice president of sales and marketing, Mio Technology USA. “We’ve put together an impressive combination of hardware and software – combined with new leadership and strategy that will make us stand out in the market.”
Mio will bring four new PNDs to market in the first half of 2009. The stylish devices span the full range from entry-level to premium and are all packed with easy-to-use features.

New PNDS
The four new PNDs in the Mio Moov line are:
· Mio Moov S300 – features a 3.5 inch display, preloaded with maps of the U.S. and Canada. It has Text-to-Speech voice direction in English, Spanish and French and more than 12 million points of interest. The device has an MSRP of $199.99.
· Mio Moov S500 – a 4.7-inch model with all the functionality of the S300. It has an MSRP of $249.99.
· Mio Moov S556 – a premium model with a stylish, ultra-flat 4.7-inch display. It includes the aforementioned functionality with the addition of Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and “Junction View,” a feature that aids motorists in complex traffic intersections. The device has an MSRP of $299.99.
· Mio Moov S700 – has a mammoth 7-inch display and is perfect for RV’s and campers. It also includes MAD Maps content for travelers who are looking for preloaded scenic routes and a unique journey. The device includes features such as preloaded maps of the U.S. and Canada, Text-to-Speech in English, Spanish and French, and more than 12 million points of interest. The device has an MSRP of $299.99.

New Interface
All of the devices come preloaded with Mio “Spirit” navigation software, which offers fast, easy-to-use search and navigation that enables users to get the most out of their GPS devices. The interface features uncluttered map views, faster POI searches and fewer clicks to reach the information vital to the navigation experience.

Mio Spirit is the latest evolution of the company’s navigation software development capabilities. Ongoing customer feedback demanded more flexibility and quicker access when searching for POI’s near their current location, their destination, or along their planned route and Mio Spirit delivers all of these capabilities. Mio has increased the navigation options and POI data, including 12 million points of interest preloaded.

New Executive and Strategy
In addition to new software and hardware, Mio has a new executive to drive the company forward in 2009. Jerry Barbera serves as the new Sales and Marketing Vice President. He is executing Mio’s new product strategy – to reposition the family of personal navigation devices to be more in-line with how consumer electronics products go to market, to address the needs of entry-level customers and also be attractive at the top end of the line to high-end customers.

Mio™ Moov S500 - User Reviews

Good Solid GPS, Not Great

[8 of 8 customers found this review helpful] ★★★★☆ 4.0
    Pros
  • Acquires satellites quickly
  • Easy menus
  • Easy to read
  • Fast recalculation
  • Large clear lcd
  • Simple controls
  • Thin
    Cons
  • Flimsy mounting
  • Lousy tech support
  • No satellite status
  • Quirky poi list
  • Speed warning poor
    Best Uses
  • Faster routes
  • Finding specific address

"I have had this GPS about 3 weeks, and tested it over about 2,000 miles of travel. I bought it after watching the Mio video introducing the S500 (European version of the S501), and assuming it would have all the same features. Wrong!

As for the good, it usually picks up satellites very quickly. Its routings are first rate. It is very nice to get a choice of route types (fastest, shortest, easiest), although it would be much better if it were easier to choose the type of route you want for a particular trip. That choice is buried too deep in the menu structure. Its recalculation is very fast, unlike my previous GPS that was painfully slow and annoying. I especially like the right side dropdown that allows you to display the Distance to Go, Time to Go, Speed, ETA, and Current Time. The only problem is that dropdown disappears whenever the GPS needs to recalculate. But compared to other GPSes that only allow you to display a few of those parameters, and sometimes only one at a time, this is wonderful.

The map display is only mediocre. I have tried each of the dozen or so color schemes, and none has the high contrast I would like. All seem to focus on pastels. It would also be better if it were easier to switch between the 2D and 3D modes.

While driving, this does offer lane guidance, which is a nice feature. However, the Mio video shows that the S500 offers Highway Sign navigation, with the signs you should expect to see displayed over the proper lanes, rather than just an indication that you should be in one of the two right lanes, for example. This is a feature I wanted, but, I found out was not part of the S501. The other missing feature shown in the videa is 3D views of urban areas.

The MioMore Desktop2 that comes with this is supposed to offer Gas Price downloads. When I first tried this (several times), I received an error message. Finally, on the fourth day, I did get it to work. However, as soon as I tried to actually use it, I got an error message that my gas prices were 24 days old, and to update again. Well, updating again does not work. The next day, I figured I would try again, but it would not let me download again, telling me I already had the file. So I used Windows Explorer to find the Gas Price files (there are two), deleted them, and then updated again. This time, the resulting message was that my gas prices were 25 days old, so I could not use them. In other words, Mio seems to have the capability to collect these prices and put them on your GPS, but can't be bothered.

Meanwhile, after the first day of problems, I sent an e-mail message to Mio, via their website, asking about the problem. They promise a response within 24 hours. That was over a week ago, and I still have not seen an answer. They also have a feature called "Mio Community," which has no community, but appears to just be a parked domain filled with Google-supplied ads (including for other company's GPS units!!!). Very disappointing.

Another problem is that in order to use some of the Desktop features, you need to have the CD in the drive. I tried copying the CD's contents to a directory on my hard drive, assuming I could point to it. No way. Either you have the CD, or, it won't work.

I have had a few occasions (probably 5 times now), where the GPS just won't pick up satellites. I finally figured out it needed to be reset, which is easy to do.

Mio brags that this GPS has 12 million POIs. Maybe it does. But I have been disappointed. For example, as a test, I tried to find two major retailers, one that has a store about two miles from me. It did not include that store (which has been around for about 18 months), although it did list others that are farther away, and have been in existence longer. I had the same experience with the other retailer. This would not be so bad, except I ran the same test on a Magellan 1470 (Mio owns Magellan), and the 1470 had the store that was closest to me. And the 1470 went on the market 8 months before the S501.

Finally, one other quirk is that this is the first GPS I have seen that does not allow you to see what satellites it is picking up. That is a significant omission.

After thinking about it a long time, I did decide to keep the GPS, rather than take advantage of Radio Shack's 30 day return privilege. I really like the large screen, the right side dropdown status bar, the fast recalculation, and the hardware button to get back to the main menu. All in all, at Radio Shack's introductory sale price, it is worth the money."

Pros
Acquires satellites quickly
Easy menus

Easy to set up
Large clear lcd
Reliable

Cons

Best Uses
Faster routes
Finding specific address
Rural navigation
Urban navigation

"I've been using a Garmin for the last year and got this Mio for Christmas. Was skeptical, never heard of a Mio. Used it today and was pleasantly surprised because I'd read some of these other reviews. If I take a different route with the Garmin, it constantly says "recalculating" and keeps telling me to turn around. To the point of irritation. The Mio tried to get me to turn around a couple of times, then adjusted itself to MY route. Didn't irritate me at all. Took me right where I wanted to go and when I got there, my destination was on the side of the road that it said it was on. I love it, and WON'T use the Garmin again."

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

"I have used a Mio 310X for the last three years, and was very happy with the unit, but it was time to upgrade. I spent many hours reading all about the newest, latest and greatest, and decided on a Garmin NUVI 255WT (on sale at [...] for 129.00).

However, I was very disappointed with the GARMIN NUVI 255WT. I found the quality of the "voice" muffled, and the road instructions abrupt and very last minute. In addition, the road names given were not the commonly known street names, but rather the State Road #'s. (I am currently on vacation in Florida. I bought this Garmin GPS on a Saturday, and was very anxious to return it on Sunday.

I went back to doing market research, and despite the many negative comments on this forum about MIO and the S501, I decided to try it out given my previous satisfaction with MIO. To make a long story short, I found this GPS to be terrific, and all prospective "GPS" purchasers should simply ignore any negative comments from other users, and confidently buy this unit.

The voice instructions are crystal clear, and the unit actually reads the highway signs as they appear. The unit announces the formal name of the street, in addition to most or all other commonly known variations. As well, the instructions are given well in advance, and repeated as you get closer to the turn etc.I have not had any difficulty in using the "POI's", and suspect that all unhappy users have simply never read the manual.

"RTFM" To be candid, I did invest about an hour or so comprehensively reading all of the documentation, but once I completed it, I found the unit easy to use, and had no difficulty or confusion about any aspect of the machine. This "GPS" is wonderful!!!"
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I have been testing out the Mio Moov 300/310 for several weeks now driving the highways and byways of the Northeast this spring to check out the latest offering from Mio. The Mio Moov series, including the standard screen 200/210, and the widescreen 300/310 are a big change for Mio, as they adopt a new operating system to carry the brand forward. After the acquisition of Navman, Mio decided to bring the software development in-house and leave the iGo interface behind. Switching to the iGo interface helped to launch the brand in the US and was one that set Mio apart from other GPS brands because it was functional, reasonably good and with their value positioning on the unit cost, not a bad trade-off for the value oriented market. I used and wrote full reviews on a lot of these units including the Mio C310X, Mio C220, Mio C230, Mio C320, Mio 520, Mio C720T. Things are changing though, as the big guys drop prices hard and fast, it leaves smaller slices of the market for value oriented brands. With a more competitive market, the bar raised due to other stronger players (think Navigon) coming to the market, it all raises the stakes for the new Moov line and Mio's new software bet. Read full review

Mio Moov 300/310 Overall - 6.5 (Acceptable)

Although it's not uncommon at this price range, reviewers are displeased with the Moov 310's sparse features. Instead, Mio focuses on basic navigation for a great value, with pricing starting at just shy of $200. Even still, many critics say the Moov 310's navigation speed and the sluggish quality of its routing engine should cause you to look elsewhere. Read full review

Today, Mio unveiled four new GPS: Mio Moov 200, 210, 300 and 310, for a MRSP of $179.95, $199.95, $229.95 and $249.95 respectively. The 200 and 210 have a 3.5 TFT Anti-Glare Touch Screen (320 x 240) and the 300 and the 310 have a 4.3″ TFT Anti-Glare Touch Screen (480 x 272). All the units come with the text-to-speech functionality, the 210 and the 310 include a one year free Traffic Messaging Channel (TMC) subscription subscription that gives real-time traffic updates. That’s a good list of features for a relatively low price point. Read full article

Mio™ Moov 200 Reviews

User Reviews

4 Star Review Decent GPS unit for the price

Strengths: Text to speech below $150, quick satellite callibration, calculates/recalculates routes quickly
Weaknesses: Lack of available maps (renders SD port useless), user interface is not as easy as in previous Mio lines (Digiwalker), car mount is not very sturdy

Posted Jul 3, 2008 - As I had good success with previous Mio gps units, I purchased this GPS unit as a father's day gift. It has been nearly flawless around Michigan, but more travel will be required to determine its capabilities/accuracy nation-wide.

At the CeBIT trade show in March, Mio announced its new line of "Moov" navigation devices. The previous generation of Mio products, all branded under the name DigiWalker, were powered by the company's version of Nav N Go's iGO software. (We've reviewed a number of these devices, including the fully-loaded DigiWalker C720t, the moderately priced wide-screen C520 and the entry-level 3.5-inch screen C220.) The new Moov devices are powered by in-house software developed using technology from Navman, a GPS company Mio acquired last year. As a result, the interface on Mio devices has changed considerably. Although I like some of the differences, especially the Moov's new text-to-speech conversion, multi-segment routing, and multiple language support, the company has taken a step backward in the way it presents points of interest (POI) information. Editorial Reviews:

"From the Manufacturer (June 19, 2008)"
Get easy-to-follow voice-guided directions and access to over 3.5 million points of interest with the svelte, stylish Mio Moov 200 portable GPS receiver. It's a great choice for adding to your car using the included windshield mount and car power cord, and it can also be used while on foot thanks to its rechargeable battery. With pre-loaded maps of all 50 U.S. States and Puerto Rico, the Mio Moov 200 is ready to operate in minutes with no computer set-up required. Other features include 1 GB of internal memory, an SD/MMC memory card slot, and up to 2.5 hours of battery life. Read Full Article
