Route 66 to Start Shipping Augmented Reality Nav in July

Audio Podcast interview with Paul Warmer, vice president of marketing

Last Februray at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona mobile navigation provider Route66 made a splash in showing up Follow Me, an augmented reality feature that basically shows the road ahead using the camera and adds a virtual 3D car driving in front of you. Indicator lights flash to tell you where to turn left or right (see picture).

Now the Romanian research and development team of Route66 is putting the final touch to this software that will debut on the Android market in a matter of days, “By the end of July“, said Paul Warmer, their vice president of marketing who met this week with GPS Business News.

After almost an hour of test drive on French roads, it is clear that the solution is pretty much ready for prime time. The behaviour of the car displayed in front of us in the test was quite realistic, even in sharp turns and at road junctions.
“Follow Me“ will be used by Samsung (Drive & Walk navigation software) in upcoming products and Route66 will also make the software available through app stores. However, the price required by Route 66 (€59 for one European country) seems a bit unrealistic under the current market conditions where TomTom/Garmin/Navigon are the only company able to sell in volume on app stores at this kind of price point.
