GPS Units on B-W Buses to Be Used for More than Just Navigation

The Baldwin-Whitehall School Board approved the use of $98,533 in B-W School District funds on Aug. 10 to purchase 89 GPS systems from Tyler Technologies for use by district buses.

While GPS, or Global Positioning System, units are traditionally used for navigation purposes only, Baldwin-Whitehall's new units have the ability to perform a variety of different functions. And many of those functions will be utilized, according to William D. McKain, the district's assistant to the superintendent for finance and operations.

McKain said that some of the highlights of B-W's new GPS units include:
  • around-the-clock maintenance reports to make district officials aware of possible safety issues before morning runs,
  • potential fuel savings provided by alerting when buses have idled for too long,
  • notifications that can be set up to alert when speed limits are reached and/or exceeded,
  • the ability to download routes into the district's routing system to make runs more accurate, and
  • notifications if and when accidents occur.
McKain said that the district's new units are "much more" than typical GPS units and that they provide "many enhanced safety features."

"It is a continuing effort to reinforce and support the mission statement we developed for the transportation department," McKain said.

That department's mission statement, as its Web page reads, is, "The Baldwin-Whitehall School District Transportation Department is dedicated to supporting the educational programs of the district by SAFELY transporting students to and from school and school related events economically, efficiently and on time."
